BATTLE ROYALE TV series in the works... at the CW
It's the best of times and the worst of times for fans of Kinji Fukasaku's cult classic Battle Royale. The Japanese hit finally, finally, had an official US theatrical release this year. Plus, the blockbuster adaptation of The Hunger Games came underfire for glaring similarites to the Toei film that features teenagers fighting to the death in a deadly game organized by the government.
Then there's this...
The CW, home to edgy TV series like the 90210 reboot and Gossip Girl, is in talks to develop the novel on which Battle Royale is based into an English-language TV series. It's not a shocking turn of events, considering The Hunger Games made more money at the domestic box office than any Harry Potter or Twilight film. And there's going to be a lot of time to fill with teenage carnage between the Hunger Games films coming out every November from 2013 to 2015.
Best case scenario, the show turns out more like Nikita than One Tree Hill. And at least the CW knows how to handle the cliques, the angst and the carnage of high school. Could you imagine what this would look like as a CBS series?
