The late 1970s and early 1980s were a golden age for indie horror. Not only were we introduced to psychotic killers like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger, but we also met evil’s worst nightmare: Ash. In Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, this heroic Michigan Stater attempts to save his friends who are attacked by demonic spirits after the group discovers The Book of the Dead and plays a mix tape of incantations.
The Evil Dead was made on a budget of $375,000 and became an instant cult hit thanks to Raimi’s signature campy, black humor, as well as the high gore quotient. The gruesome violence did impede the film’s release in several countries around the world, and even earned it an NC-17 when it was finally rated in 1994. Still,The Evil Dead spawned a terrific B-horror franchise, made Bruce Campbell a star, and gave Joel Coen, who served as assistant editor, something to do before he and Ethan made Blood Simple in 1984.
