Nazi zombies never looked as good as they do in Dead Snow, a Norwegian horror-comedy that plays to the genre strengths. Yes, it’s gory. Really gory.
This knowing little movie about a group of med students who face-off with the undead members of a Nazi death squad can’t help but make obvious nods to genre classics like Evil Dead (it’s set in an isolated cabin, after all) and Dead Alive (a.k.a. Braindead, as one character’s t-shirt reminds us). Even though it lacks in originality of plot and character, the film makes up for it with gruesome splatter scenes and awesome zombie designs, specifically that of Standartenführer Herzog.
Dead Snow also features outhouse sex, which isn’t nearly as fun as it sounds. But the scene sets up a pretty sick postcoital kill that makes it all worth it.
